Turkish Airlines has trained its light attendants on sign language as the airline seeks to expand its services to passengers.

The course came ahead of the Deaflympics in Turkey next month, which is one of the biggest international sports events for the hearing impaired. The event will be held in Samsun in Turkey.

About 8,000 hearing impaired athletes will attend the event. Knowing sign language will help flight attendants address the needs of the athletes and their team members. Turkish Airlines had about 6,000 hearing-impaired passengers last year and with the introduction of attendants fluent in sign language, they hope to see the numbers rise.

The flight attendants will be exclusively assigned to flights with hearing impaired passengers. There are 130 flight attendants who have already taken the sign language courses.
