Kerala’s Kannur is India's first plastic-free district
A district in Kerala has set an example for others by becoming the first plastic-free district in the country in just a few months.
The Kannur district has been declared free of plastic disposables and carry-bags early this year.
The campaign to become free of plastic was launched in Kannur last year. The use of plastic carry-bags was replaced by handloom-made bags.
Local authorities worked together to put a ban on the use of plastic carry bags and disposable articles like plates and cups.
Businesses have also started using handloom-made bags and paper boxes instead of plastics.
