Temple in Kerala shelters elderly abandoned by families
The Oachira Parabrahma temple in Kollam district in Kerala offers shelter to hundreds of elderly who have no one to look after them.
There are over 300 elderly men and women living at the temple, who have come from various parts of Kerala and India seeking a place to stay.
The temple has a special shelter for 30 of the oldest and sickest men and women. The others live in small tents scattered across the temple property, and sleep in the roofed, open hall during the night.
They get rice kanji and tea in the morning, and a cup of tea and dinner each evening. Abandoned at an age when they need support the most, the Oachira Parabrahma temple provides much-needed shelter. The Temple Committee also provides for their health needs with free treatment at a nearby multispecialty hospital.
