Games that fight hearing loss

Researchers at Washington University in the United States have developed games that could help the millions of people who have hearing loss.

The software uses a unique game-like approach that teaches the brain to better 'listen' in challenging environments. Users can even play with the voice of a person they want to hear better, such as a partner, teacher or child.

More than 35 million adults in the US have meaningful hearing loss that affects their ability to have conversations. Hearing loss can be isolating and strain relationships with friends or co-workers. Not treating it puts people at higher risk of a decline in reasoning, Alzheimer’s, dementia and depression.

The software is designed to boost confidence and skills for talking in noisy environments, which is one of the biggest complaints among people with hearing loss. Through games, the software exercises skills such as word memory, focus and speed that are important for understanding speech.
