Ratha Yatra festival is celebrated today
Ratha Yatra, also known as Rathayatra, Rathjatra or Chariot festival is an Odia festival. Ratha means chariot and yatra means journey.
The festival is fully devoted to the Hindu God, Lord Jagannath.
It involves a public procession from Puri Jagannath temple with a chariot of gods Jagannath (Vishnu avatar), Balabhadra (his brother), Subhadra (his sister) and Sudarshana Chakra (his weapon) on a ratha (a wooden chariot) to the Gundicha Mata Temple, located in Puri in the Orissa state of India.
After nine days, devotees return with the chariot to the Puri Jagannath temple.
Devotees involved in the procession sing devotional songs, chant sacred mantras with the sound of drum and pray to get lots of blessings of the Lord Jagannath to fulfil their wishes.
