Panic buttons & apps help elderly Indians facing abuse
Nearly one in six people aged 60 years and above have been mentally abused, financially exploited and physically hurt, says a report. Abuse against senior citizens is said to increase with the rise in their population.
Growing awareness of elderly abuse has led to the launch of new apps and technologies to help the elderly call for help and report abuse.
Aaji Care, a mobile and web-based service offers a physical panic button, which allows the elderly to call on five phone numbers during an emergency.
Mumbai police has recently introduced ElderLine, which is a helpline that connects elderly people with volunteer doctors, hospitals, counsellors, social workers and police.
HelpAge India has started an SOS mobile app, which provides one-click, easy access emergency service for the elderly or others to report abuse easily.
