Karnataka fails to provide proper wheelchairs to the disabled

Only 10% of the wheelchairs used by 66.8 lakh disabled people of Karnataka are proper for use and made as per World Health Organisation (WHO) standards, says a recent study.

It means 90% of the wheelchairs used by disabled people in the state are not properly built and creates problems for the disabled as well as senior citizens suffering from long-term health issues like dementia and arthritis.

Lack of proper wheelchair causes posture problems, severe psychological barriers, increases body pain and may be dangerous for patients with serious spinal cord injuries.

Also, such inappropriate wheelchairs make it inaccessible for the disabled people to avail basic healthcare services, get educated and earn income.
