Tamil Nadu theatre owners to protest against GST from today
More than 1,000 theatres in Tamil Nadu will go on a strike today to oppose the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) that was introduced on 1 July.
It is because the theatre owners will have to pay GST of 18% plus the 30% tax charged by the municipal corporation, which makes the total of 48% of tax.
This new tax rate is huge and it will affect the business of the local theatres in the state.
The Tamil Nadu film industry also plans to go on a protest to request the central government to include the regional cinema in the least tax slab, non-regional films in the next tax slab and the foreign language films in the highest tax slab, so that it doesn’t affect the viewership.
