Tamil Nadu theatre strike ends, temporary relief on local tax

Tamil filmmakers and theatre owners have called off the protest against the government’s decision to charge 30% of local entertainment tax on and above 28% of GST.

The theatres have started working from Friday after being shut from 3 July.

After meeting the officials from the Tamil film industry, the government has decided that the local tax will be removed at present and a committee will be set up to decide if the tax is required or not for the future.

From Friday, the movie tickets will cost Rs 120 with an extra 28% of GST.

It was also announced that Tamil films like Ivan Thanthiran, Maragatha Naanayam and Vanamagan, which were running in cinemas when the protest was started, will get an extra week’s run.
