Madurai opens park for kids with special needs

With a huge sensory garden, an area for indoor games, and swing sets, disabled children in Madurai finally have an open area to run around and play.
Tamil Nadu’s first ‘Disabled Friendly Park’ was opened on Saturday. Parents of special needs kids said they were happy as they needed an inclusive outdoor atmosphere with basic amenities.
Special needs kids tend to attract a lot of attention in regular parks and this makes the experience uncomfortable for them. Parents said that the new park will give both parents and the children some peace.
An organization of parents who have children with disabilities contributed Rs 15 lakh for the project, while local municipal authorities put in the rest. The organisation will take care of the development and maintenance of the area for the next three years.
The park has a garden which helps in stimulating the five senses. There are many slides, a family swing, merry-go-rounds and a throwball court. Special railings have been in put in place so that children are comfortable. The park is ramp-friendly. It will soon have wheelchair-friendly toilets and a large fish tank. Parents are excited as they can finally walk out of home and entertain their children.
