New device to check hearing in babies launched
Sohum is the name of a new hearing testing device that has been developed in India.
The device has been created to check the hearing of new born babies and detect hearing disabilities.
Sohum is not very costly and can be made available across the country easily to ensure early detection of hearing disability.
Sohum will benefit around 26 million babies born every year in India.
The early detection of hearing defects can help in providing timely treatment and therapy to the child.
After the child is older than four years, the defects cannot be treated or corrected, affecting the quality of life.
The device is battery operated and does not need to be inserted into the babies.
At present, testing is done by inserting equipment in ears, which is risky and babies have to be sedated.
