Tamil Nadu in need of a proper policy for palliative care
The health department of Tamil Nadu has announced recently that palliative care will be offered at all government hospitals. However, it is reported that the state doesn’t have a proper palliative care policy.
A policy was made for palliative care in the country about five years ago, but no facilities like trained doctors and staff have been provided under the policy as the funds are not shared properly. Lack of palliative care in the state has led to the sad situation of the people suffering from dangerous diseases such as heart diseases, cancer, liver disease, AIDS, diabetes, kidney failure, arthritis, dementia and others.
Palliative care is a special medical care for people with serious illness. It aims to improve the lives of such patients and their families by reducing the pain and assisting through physical and psychological problems for all age groups.
