Amazon India to start food retail business in Diwali
Online shopping company Amazon India is set to enter in online food retailing in India during the Diwali festival.
The company will launch the new business through Amazon Retail India Pvt Ltd and also plans to start a private grocery label in India as it has done in the US.
Amazon recently got government’s approval for supplying and selling food and groceries in India online and through stores.
The company plans to invest $500 million in the food segment in India over the next five years.
It aims to sell locally made and packaged food products from other companies under its own private label. As for now, Amazon offers food products same-day grocery delivery on its Amazon Now app through a tie-up with retail companies such as Big Bazaar and Hypercity in some cities. Now it will sell food products directly to customers.
