70% of senior citizens are abused in public places, says study
Nearly 70% of senior citizens are abused in public places in Guwahati, says a study by NGO HelpAge India.
Majority of the seniors have experienced rude behaviour from bus drivers and ticket collectors.
Many seniors are not even given a seat in a bus though seats are reserved for senior citizens.
The survey highlighted that only 21% of the seniors are offered seats.
The elders have also faced discrimination while shopping as medicine shop owners or managers first pay attention to young customers then deal with the old people.
The survey results were based on the feedback of at least 201 seniors from the city and included experiences of elders in public places like buses, parks, banks, post offices, electricity offices, healthcare centres, markets, malls and chemist shops.
