Today is the festival of Bakr Id / Eid ul-Adha
Bakr-Id, which is also known as Eid al-Adha or Id-ul-Adha, is a festival of sacrifice that Muslims celebrate all over the world with special prayers, greetings and gifts.
It is believed that Allah (God) asked Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Ibrahim followed God’s orders, but an angel put a sheep in the place of Ishmael at the last moment.
In remembrance of this, an animal such as sheep or goat may be sacrificed during this festival and shared with family members, neighbours and the poor.
Eid al-Adha marks the end of Hajj, the journey which is done by Muslims at least once in their lifetimes as one of the five pillars of Islam.
