1 in 5 new moms stay silent about post-delivery depression
21% or one in five new mothers who experience mood disorders like anxiety and depression after delivery do not disclose their symptoms to doctors, says a new study.
Over 10-20% of women experience significant mood disorders after childbirth. Those disorders can badly affect the physical and emotional well-being of both mothers and children.
Many women don't get the benefit of treatment as they don't tell anyone about what they are dealing with. This is even more true for women who are not employed, have a history of mental health problems or are facing severe symptoms.
Experts say that the study points to the need for support networks for new mothers as well make it alright for women to talk about their mental health so they can have better access to care.
