5-year-old deaf & speech impaired child left orphaned after parents commit suicide
In a terrible incident, the parents of a five-year-old deaf and speech impaired girl committed suicide by jumping into a local canal, leaving her an orphan. The couple is said to have taken such an extreme step as they were not able to meet the expenses for the baby's treatment.
The child is temporarily under the care and protection of her paternal grandparents, who have told the police that they cannot afford to look after her.
The incident took place in a village in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district. The body of the mother has been found while that of the father is still missing.
Relatives said that the parents left home to take their daughter Tejaswani to hospital for treatment. Tejaswani was born deaf and speech impaired and is also not able to walk on her own.
As the bike was crossing a canal, the mother suddenly got down and jumped into the canal. Immediately, the father followed her too. People passing by saw the child crying alone besides the bike. From her signs, they understood that both her parents had jumped into the canal.
The father was working as a sports teacher in a private school.
