Sindoor contains harmful lead, says research
A research done in the USA has found that sindoor may contain harmful amount of lead.
Sindoor is a traditional red colored cosmetic powder that is worn by married Hindu women on their head. Also men and children may wear it for religious purposes on their foreheads.
The researchers did the testing of sindoor powder being sold in the US and India. 118 sindoor samples were tested and 80% of them had at least some lead.
Many samples contained lead in quantity that is more than the limit set by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Lead is considered very harmful for health even in very small quantities.
