Odisha government suggests Centre to start a sickle cell disorder institute in state
The government of Odisha has suggested the central government to set up a National Institute of Sickle Cell Disorder in the state.
The idea is to start a high-level research on the disease that has become a serious health problem in tribal and western parts of the state.
Sickle Cell disease is a group of disorders that cause red blood cells to become misshapen and break down. It mainly exists among the tribal communities and some other groups in different states of the country.
The Odisha government has already started a sickle cell institute at the VSS medical college and hospital at Burla some years back. However, the high death rates caused by the disease has led to the need for a national level research and checkup, which can be done only through set up of this national institute.
