Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated today

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated in India to mark the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who is known as the "Father of the Nation" and also called as 'Bapu ji'. Mahatma Gandhi was the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule.

Gandhi Jayanti is one of the three national holidays of the country. The day is celebrated by prayer services all over India.

Some activities to celebrate the occasion include prayer meetings and tributes across the country and programmes are held in different cities by colleges, local government and private organisations.

Painting and essay competitions are held on topics of peace, non-violence and Gandhi's work in Indian Freedom Struggle.

Gandhi's favourite bhajan (Hindu devotional song), “Raghupathi Raghava Rajaram”, is usually sung by people to remember him.
