Kerala to launch project for elderly care in November
The Kudumbashree Mission that was started by the Kerala government will expand its services for elderly care in November when the first batch of trained youth will be sent out to look after the elderly in urban areas.
The Mission will also set up a helpdesk with a helpline, a mobile app and an online healthcare monitoring and services on call system for the elderly. The population of people over 60 years in Kerala is expected to increase by 20% by 2025.
Kudumbashree already had volunteers and neighbourhood groups that provide services for children. This will now be expanded to the elderly.
The focus is on the elderly in cities as they are left alone at home when their family members are working abroad.
The service brigade will be made up of men and women below 45 years who are healthy, physically fit and willing to look after the elderly. All one has to do is make a phone call or an online request any time during the day.
