Punjab NGO organises fund-raiser musical evening for the visually impaired
Saksham Punjab, an NGO in Punjab for the visually impaired children in association with HMV College, organised a fund-raiser musical evening by famous Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans recently.
The idea of the programme was to raise funds for the creation of accessible digital talking books of under graduation level of Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar.
Since 2011, the NGO has been working in the area of talking book production to help visually impaired people read books without any sighted assistance.
Around 500 books in Punjabi, Hindi and English medium are produced in DAISY format for classes 9 to 12 of the state board and state universities.
DAISY is the international technical standard for digital audio books and allows visually impaired and print disabled people to go through an audio book virtually line by line, use search functions, place bookmarks, which are not possible in regular audio books.
