Bring law to make eye donation compulsory after death, says tourism minister
Tourism minister K J Alphons has asked the government to consider introducing a law to make eye donation compulsory after death.
The minister said that there was a need to look at the Sri Lankan law that made it necessary under law for eyes to be donated after death.
The initiative has helped Sri Lanka to make sure that the eyes reach out to its visually impaired citizens and also to the blind people of other nations.
Similar law in India can be of help to 25% of the 15 million visually impaired people, who could see through a corneal implant.
He has highlighted the need to improve awareness about eye donation and said that he would discuss the issue with the ministry of health.
