Indian father in Texas arrested over death of adopted child
Wesley Mathews, an Indian engineer from Kerala based in Texas, United States, has been arrested for the death of his three-year-old adopted daughter Sherin.
The father had first told the police that he had made Sherin stand outside the home at night for not drinking her milk. He later admitted that she had choked on a glass of milk that he forced her to have.
Mathews has told the police that he thought Sherin had died since he could not feel her pulse and removed her body from the house.
He said that he had physically helped her to drink the milk in the garage but she began to choke. Her breathing slowed down and Mathews did not feel her pulse.
Mathews faces life in prison for causing injury to a child.
For nearly 15 days, Mathews told the police that he sent the child outside the house at 3 AM to discipline her for not drinking her milk. And that when he went to check on her 15 minutes later, she was missing.
The police had doubted this version because he reported her missing five hours after she went missing. Sniffer dogs, drones and helicopters were being used to find the girl.
On Monday, the body of a small child was found hidden in a ditch close to the Mathews' home. It has been confirmed that the the child was Sherin by using dental records.
Mathews and his wife, Sini, adopted Sherin about two years ago. The parents have told the police that she was malnourished and had to be fed whenever she was awake.
