New fathers also experience post natal depression, says study
A new study says that post natal depression is a common problem among new fathers.
It means becoming a parent can be emotionally difficult for many men.
The research was done on 447 new fathers. It also found that the screening method to identify depression does not work properly for men.
The method fails to record symptoms which are more common in men, such as irritation, restlessness, low stress tolerance, and lack of self-control.
Another study has also shown that men are often hesitant to seek help for mental health issues like depression.
Finding depression in new parents is important not for their own health but also because depressed parents often become less caring for the needs of their children.
