Less than 1% educational institutes are disabled friendly
As per data, not even 1% of educational institutes in the country are accessible for people with disabilities.
This information was presented during the National Convention of Youth with Disabilities. The data is available at the website of the University Grants Commission - UGC of India.
The data also states that there are 789 universities, 37,204 colleges and 11,443 stand-alone institutions in India.
Only around 15 of these are disabled friendly, despite the various provisions made by the law and the government.
The numbers also claims that at present 50% of persons with disabilities in the country are under 25 years of age.
This increases the need for a better education system to enable and empower the disabled youth and children.
National Convention of Youth with Disabilities was attended by around 100 people with disabilities, including 65 students from the top institutes of the country.
