Major lack in reservation for disabled even after the RPWD 2016
It will soon be nearly a year since Parliament passed the Right of Persons with Disability Bill 2016. Yet, the Act remains on paper and little has been done to ensure its implementation across the country.
As per the provisions of RPWD 2016, disability reservation quota was increased from 3% to 4% in government jobs. In higher education, the quota was raised from 3% to 5%.
However, most government departments and higher education institutions have failed to bring the quota into practice.
There is still a major lack of awareness and apathy towards the abilities that the disabled have.
This means they continue to face barriers in getting hired for work, with many employers assuming that they will not fit the job requirements.
Passing the Act alone is enough enough. It needs to go hand in hand with creating awareness about it.
