Health ministry starts initiative to reduce heart-related deaths
Nearly 200 million adults in India suffer from high blood pressure.
However, a recent study says that only 25% of the people with high blood pressure in village areas are aware of their health problem.
Creating an action plan to combat hypertension in India
In city areas, 40% of the people with hypertension are aware but only 20% of them have their blood pressure under control.
People with hypertension are more likely to get heart attacks and stroke in India.
So, the health ministry has started the India Hypertension Management Initiative (IHMI) to improve treatment and manage hypertension at basic health care level.
This is in association with the Department of Health Research (DHR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research.
The initiative will help state governments to create a action plan and work towards reducing disability and heart-related deaths in the country.
