India's elderly vulnerable to abuse as they are unaware of basic rights
A new study by the Agewell Foundation says that 86% of the senior citizens are not aware of their human rights.
It also says that there is an increase in the breaking of human rights of elderly people due to the popularity of small families, lack of communication among family members and no inclusive social security system.
The research was done on 5,000 senior citizens all over India and was released on the occasion of International Human Rights Day.
The report also says that only 68.8% of elderly people have access to the required medicines and healthcare. The situation is worse in city areas.
The report also shows the common problems faced by the senior citizens such as loss of respect in the family, lack of access to medicines, security and depression.
