Stricter punishment for those who misuse disabled train coaches

The Government Railway Police – GRP has decided to take stricter action against people who misuse the disabled coaches in Mumbai trains and travel in them without being disabled.

The GRP will now book such offenders under the Right of Persons with Disabilities Act – RPWD.

The act calls for a maximum punishment of Rupees One lakh as fine and two years’ imprisonment or both. The normal fine is 500 rupees.

There have been repeated instances of able bodied people using the train coaches reserved for the disabled people.

This leads to the crowding of the disabled coaches and people with disabilities fail to board the train coaches some times.

The authorities hope that a stricter punishment will discourage commuters from getting into coaches reserved for the people with disabilities.
