Mumbai Police arrest 2 people in connection with pub fire
Two managers of the 1Above restaurant have been arrested for the fire that killed 14 people last week in Mumbai.
Fire highlights concerns over fire safety in India
Kevin Bawa and Lisbon Lopez, both in their 30's, were arrested, two days after the deadly fire tore through the restaurant. They have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Many of the victims in the fire were young women who were attending a birthday party on the rooftop when the fire broke out. They died of suffocation as they tried to flee the burning building.
Many people are demanding action against the Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and Chief Fire Officer Prabhat Rahangdale for ignoring complaints against shopping malls, hotels and restaurants for not following safety measures.
Latest incident is just one week after similar incident in a sweet shop
The deaths have also highlighted the connection between restaurant owners, politicians and civic officials for ignoring illegal and fire-hazardous structures.
