Caste violence breaks out in parts of Mumbai

Parts of Mumbai are facing curfew like situation after members of the Dalit community took to the streets to protest against the Bhima Koregaon attack that took place on Monday in Pune.

As per reports, shops are being forced to shut down in some areas such as Powai, Chembur, Mulund, and Thane. The protest has been called by the Dalit communities in Mumbai.

On Monday some people with saffron flags had pelted stones at cars going towards Bhima Koregaon village and one person died due to injuries.

Members of the Dalit community were going to take part in the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Koregoan. Reports have come in of violence and protest in Pune as well. Buses have been set on fire and bus services to Ahmednagar and Aurangabad were suspended.

Every New Year’s Day, thousands of people gather at Bhima Koregaon to commemorate the victory of the English-led Mahar soldiers, against the Brahmin Peshwa-led Maratha Empire in 1818.
