Scientist can now use Stem cell to treat leading cause of blindness
Kapil Bharti is an Indian-origin scientist at the National Eye Institute (NEI) in the US.
His team has found a method cells to treat a leading cause of blindness.
The scientists have found that a layer of cells in the back of the eye are essential for the retina's light-sensing photoreceptors - RPE to survive.
When these cells stop working properly, they cause age-related macular degeneration leading to blindness.
RPE cells die leading to vision loss.
Kapil Bharti and his team have found a method to generate and replace RPE cells using stem cells.
The information can now be used for stem cell- based RPE transplantation into patients with geographic atrophy.
The team is very satisfied with their research and clinical trials may be launched this year.
