Pune doctor is spreading smiles through free surgeries for children
Dr Pushkar Waknis is based in Pune and is a maxillofacial surgeon. He specializes in treating the defects of the face through surgery.
He has been using his specialty to bring smiles to the children from weaker sections of society that are born with cleft lips.
Dr Waknis gives free cleft surgery to children tfrom socially and economically backward sections of the society.
This initiative is part of a soial cause run by the Spreading Smiles Foundation, a charitable wing of Saishree Hospital, Aundh.
Cleft lips occur during the development of the foetus in the womb and can only be corrected by surgery.
One out of 700 children in India is born with the condition.
The face defect can have a negative impact on the overall self-image of the person and a surgery can make a huge difference.
Dr Waknis has been able to change the lives of 150 children since 2012.
He says that the smiles of the children are his reward and he wishes to continue in the field and make lives better.
