1 April is last date for installation of Panic buttons in public transport vehicles

The government has announced that 1 April is the last date for the mandatory installation of Global Positioning System - GPS devices and panic buttons in all public transport vehicles, including taxis and buses.

The panic buttons will be used by the people for their safety in case of danger.

Passengers to alert police and transport department in panic situations by pressing the panic buttons.

The road ministry has declared that the deadline will not be extended and is binding across the country.

Most of the states are yet to start the process of installing the panic buttons despite the repeated reminders from the road ministry.

For the time being, three-wheelers like e-rickshaws and auto rickshaws have been exempted from the rule.
