Protests in Allahabad after law student is beaten to death
Students took to the streets to protest and throw stones and even set a bus on fire in Allahabad after a 26-year-old law student was murdered at a restaurant by some men.
Police in riot gear had to be called in to control the protestors, all of whom were students of Allahabad University.
The victim, Dilip Saroj was beaten to death with a hockey stick, an iron rod and bricks in a fight that started when the main accused Vijay Shankar Singh accidentally brushed against him while entering a restaurant. The murder was caught on mobile phone camera.
Saroj fell unconscious and died in hospital on Saturday. A waiter has also been arrested as he hit Saroj on the head with an iron rod. The same waiter has also been caught on camera picking up the student and taking him to hospital. The accused, who apparently works with Indian Railways, is missing.
Two policemen have been suspended for not responding though their patrol car was just about 100 metres from the restaurant. The restaurant's manager had reportedly dialled the helpline 100, but no action was taken.
The argument broke out when Saroj and his friends were sitting on the stairs outside the restaurant, waiting for their order. The accused and his friends were going inside when he bumped against Saroj. Soon a fight broke out. Video shows Saroj going into the restaurant to confront Singh and his group picking up a chair to hit him.
