Today is Maha Shivaratri

Today is Maha Shivaratri, and the day is celebrated by Hindus in honour of god Shiva. Maha Shivaratri means the “night of Shiva".

The festival is celebrated in various parts of India and is symbolic of overcoming darkness and ignorance in life.

Maha Shivaratri was the day when Shiva drank poisonous negativity in order to protect the world.

The day is marked with activities like remembering lord Shiva and chanting prayers, fasting, and spending the day in peace.

Fruits, leaves, sweets and milk are offered to God Shiva in temples and devotees keep up all night praying to the god.

Maha Shivratri 2018 will be celebrated on 13 February and will be extended till 14 February.

The day is observed as a Gazetted Holiday in the country meaning it is observed as holiday by government offices, schools and banks
