Former President of India says condition of disabled in India unsatisfactory despite policies

Pranab Mukherjee, the former President of India has said that even though the disabled make up 2.21% of the country's population, their condition is less than satisfactory. This is even though many laws have been put in place.

He was speaking at a seminar - Rights of Persons With Disabilities: Contemporary Developments - held at Delhi University. He also made an appeal to the public to regard people with disabilities as equals. He said that the government has spent a substantial amount of money on policies and schemes for their empowerment, yet discrimination, segregation and marginalisation is become common.

He said that the solution lay in strict enforcement of existing laws as well as education of people about disability.
