‘Depressed’ man arrested for ill-treating holy book
A 36 year old man was caught by Ludhiana police in Punjab for allegedly ill-treating the Sikh holy book ‘Sukhmani Sahib’. Bhupinder Singh, a resident of Rishi Nagar, snatched the holy book from the hands of a woman in a Gurudwara. He ran away with the book and started tearing its pages in public. His relatives said that Bhupinder Singh has been battling ‘acute depression’ ever since his father died.
According to the witnesses, Bhupinder Singh went to the Y block of Rishi Nagar Gurudwara. 2 women were standing there and they had the ‘Sukhmani Sahib’ in their hands. Bhupinder snatched the book from one of the women named Harjinder Kaur. He tore a few pages from the book as well. Bhupinder has been booked under Section 295A (hurting religious sentiments) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) .
Bhupinder Singh’s father died last year and he was a ‘granthi’ (a Sikh priest). Bhupinder has been mentally ill since then. Bhupinder who is working has a mother and brother too. He has studied till the 8th standard.
