Priya Prakash Varrier moves to Supreme Court against charges

Internet sensation Priya Prakash Varrier and team of the movie ‘Oru Adaar Love’ has moved to the Supreme Court asking them to let go off the charges that have been filed against them after a song from their movie went viral. The petition was filed on Monday. The petitioner pointed out that the complaint that has been filed against Priya Prakash Varrier violates her freedom of speech and expression.

The song ‘Manikya Malaraya Poovi’ from the movie ‘Oru Adaar Love’ was released on the first week of February and Priya’s wink in the song had gone viral! She is seen winking at a male friend in the song.

A group of Muslim youth from Hyderabad had given a case against makers of the movie pointing out that the lyrics of the song offends the Muslim community. It was members of the Hyderabad-based Islamic seminary Jamia Nizamia who issued a fatwa against this song.

The police filed a case against Omar Lulu, director of the movie for hurting religious sentiments.

Meanwhile, the song which was remade has been a favourite amongst the Muslim community in Kerala since the 70’s. No Muslims have found this song offensive and was cherished by people across the state.
