Canadian PM Justin Trudeau criticized for meeting convicted terrorist during India trip
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing strong reactions from the Indian government and the media. The angry reactions broke out after his wife Sophie met with a convicted Khalistani terrorist, Jaspal Atwal in Mumbai and posed for pictures. Trudeau has now said that the matter is being taken very seriously.
Trudeau, who is on his first official visit to India, had also invited Atwal for an official dinner in Delhi. His office has now withdrawn the invite after the angry reactions. Trudeau has said that he did not invite Atwal personally, but that someone from his cabinet may have done so.
Atwal used to be a member of the International Sikh Youth Federation. He had confessed to trying to kill a Punjab minister in 1986 in Canada. Atwal was sentenced to 20 years in prison
Atwal is based in Canada now. The Canadian PM has said that Atwal is not a part of the official Canadian delegation, but is in India in a private capacity.
