Neil Harbisson- First person in the world with an antenna implant
Neil Harbisson is the world’s first legally recognized cyborg and is also for being the first person in the world with an antenna implanted in his skull.
A cyborg or a cybernetic organism is a being that has both organic and bio mechatronic body parts in their body.
He is currently in New Delhi and shared his views on how technology can help people overcome their disabilities.
Harbisson attended the Design ID 2018, an annual design event which brings together the world’s top design visionaries, architects and designers together to talk about present and future of technology.
Harbisson is the co-founder of the Cyborg Foundation, an international platform which aims to provide the opportunity to develop their own artificial senses to people. He spoke about the wide scope that the designing of such technology has in India.
Neil Harbisson was born with a vision defect – achromatopsia, because of which he could not see colors. To resolve this issue an antenna was implanted in his head that allows him to get signals directly into his brain.
The Cyborg Antenna is a sensory organ and has been permanently attached to Harbisson’s head since 2004.
The antenna sends audible vibrations in his skull to report various types of information to him such as measurements of electromagnetic radiation, phone calls, music, as well as video or images which are translated into audible vibration.
The antenna is also Wi-Fi enabled antenna and allows him to receive signals and data from satellites.
