Chennai job fair for people with disabilities gets huge response from companies, employees
A job fair for people with disabilities saw over 200 companies registering and over 3,000 potential employees gathering at the venue. It was organised by the NGO, ' We Are Your Voice'.
Over 1,000 volunteers helped organise the event. It was a platform for Industrial Training Institute, (ITI) graduates, diploma-holders and graduates to interact with employers from different fields.
Among the companies that gathered were State Bank of India and Life Insurance Corporation, Bank of America and Wipro. No fee was collected from either job-seekers or employers. There were candidates from all over the country.
Many of the prospective employees said that unlike other job fairs, they were heard and taken seriously. They felt they were among equals and were comfortable. Companies too, found this to be an effective way to reach out to skilled candidates.
As per Census 2011, there are about three crore people with disabilities in India. Although many are qualified to work, they are limited when it comes to options as the world thinks their disability defines them.
