J&K may release man after disabled mother appeals to state govt

The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said that the government might consider giving pardon to a prisoner after his disabled mother wrote an open letter to the Chief Minister of the state. Fahmeeda, the disabled mother of 23-year-old Sheikh Danish Mushtaq, wrote a letter to Mufti to which the Chief Minister reacted the next day itself.

Mufti said that in keeping with the government's commitment to social inclusion, it would consider giving pardon to Mushtaq.

Mushtaq was arrested under the Public Safety Act (PSA). According to Fahmeeda, the courts had forgiven him, but he still spends his life in different jails. She said that her son has not committed any crimes and is someone who believes in non-violence.

Fahmeeda said that she had expected her son to be released along with the hundreds of other youths who got out of prison under amnesty. But her heart was broken when she realized that her son’s name was not there in the list.
