In conflict-ridden Jammu & Kashmir, a school that is a haven for children with disabilities
The Shafaqat Special School for Children in Srinagar in Jammu and Srinagar stands out in a state that is regarded as unsympathetic to the needs of children with disabilities.
The school is a part of the Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS). This organization prepares children with disabilities for the world outside.
Dr Maqbool Mir started the Shafaqat Special School for Children. Dr Mir was a surgeon at the Government Medical College in Srinagar.
The school for children with disabilities runs solely on the basis of donations from well-wishers. There are 12 classrooms. What is remarkable is that each class has six students to ensure they receive personalized care.
The VMS now has plans to takes its good work outside Kashmir. They want to start camps across India for children with disabilities. What they need is support from people to start this initiative. The VMS also plans to start a school in North India for children with disabilities.
