Senior citizens unaware of benefits of Maintenance & Welfare of Parents & Senior Citizens Act, says court

The Madras High Court has said that senior citizens are not aware of the benefits of Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

The Act provides for the protection of life and property of senior citizens in India.

The court made this observation while hearing the case of the murder of an elderly person.

The three accused, Renganathan, his wife, and one Amirtharaj, had killed an estate owner in Tamil Nadu in 2012.

A will made by the deceased in the name of the accused, Renganathan, led to his murder.

They were sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment by a lower court in 2017. The accused appealed against the conviction.

The High Court said that the elderly victim was unaware of his rights. He did not know that he could make a new will and cancel the previous one.

The Madras High Court has said that it is the responsibility of the central and state governments to create awareness about the Act.
