India needs awareness about diseases of retina
Eye doctors in India have stressed on the need for better eye care awareness.
Senior ophthalmologists called for awareness about diseases of the retina among the people.
According to the experts, age-related blindness and loss of vision due to diabetes can be managed. The vision loss cannot be completely corrected.
The number of Indians with age-related macular degeneration are expected to rise in the coming years as the population is aging.
With proper awareness the vision damage can be controlled and better eye health can be attained.
The experts have also said that there is a lack of awareness and information in people about diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy is a common eye ailment found in people with diabetes.
It happens when high blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina.
However, in most cases, patients do not realize the symptoms until it is too late. Only a trained retina specialist can detect the presence of the damage.
India has about 2 crore patients with diabetic retinopathy while, retina specialists are between 900 and 1100.
