Large head circumference in babies makes them more prone to brain damage
A recent study says that babies born with a large head circumference are vulnerable to brain damage.
Injuries to the white matter of the brain are what usually cause mental health problems and brain damage. It might even lead to cerebral palsy, autism and other disorders.
The damage in the white matter of the brain is often seen in preterm babies. But there are chances of spotting this in babies that are born close to the due date as well. Some of them end up having a large head and suffer brain damage due to pressure during delivery.
Researchers talk about a newborn baby girl who suffered a stroke after a traumatic delivery. She had brain damage, deformities in her head, and defective facial bones as well. Her head circumference was greater than the 90th percentile of what is seen in a normal baby.
