5,000 disabled teachers in Punjab exempted from exam duties by education board

More than 5,000 teachers with disabilities with the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) will not have to carry out evaluation and supervision duties for class 10 and 12 examinations. The teachers have been exempted under the Handicapped Act, 1995.

This is a change from the previous policy. Earlier, the PSEB would exempt only certain cases. These were teachers who were visually impaired, or had mobility challenges .

Then, many teachers with other kinds of disabilities spoke up about the difficulties that they faced during supervision hours. They requested the PSEB to not include them in the duties.

In a letter to all District Education Officers (DEOs), the Secretary of the PSEB confirmed that all teachers with disabilities would be exempted from now on.

The letter said that even though district-level authorities were asked to reconsider the duties that were given to physically disabled teachers, the authorities did not take the matter seriously.

However, the disabled teachers say that the orders exempting them from class 10 and 12 exams have come late as the exams are ending soon.
