Woman in Kerala arrested for beating up 90-year-old grandmother
Like most cases of elderly abuse, this was a case that had been witnessed for years and yet no one stepped forward. Ninety-year-old Kalyani Amma would cry loudly as her 39-year-old granddaughter, Deepa, would beat her up, sometimes in full public view. They lived together in Kannur in Kerala, in a neighborhood called Ayikkra.
Deepa managed to get away with the crime for a long time. Finally, a video taken by a neighbor led to justice.
A video of the assault went viral on social media. Deepa can be seen beating her grandmother, who is sitting on the floor at the entrance of the house. Deepa can also be seen pulling out the bed sheet on which Kalyani Amma is sitting. She then slaps her a few times.
As neighbors step in and try to talk her out of beating her grandmother, Deepa can be seen arguing with them, loudly.
The police have intervened and arrested Deepa under Section 323 (causing voluntary harm) of the Indian Penal Code.
Police say that Deepa lived with her mother, grandmother, and her two children in the same house. She told the police that she was frustrated as she had lost her job a few months ago and was facing financial problems. The grandmother was suffering from various illnesses. Deepa says she got irritated and beat her up.
The police has rescued Kalyani Amma and her daughter (Deepa's mother). They are both in a state-run home.
